คำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษจำนวนมากเกิดขึ้นจากนำ Affix เติมเข้าไปใน Root จนกลายมาเป็นคำศัพท์ใหม่ โดย Root (รากศัพท์) คือคำที่มาจากรากศัพท์ภาษา Greek หรือ Latin ซึ่งจะมีความหมายอยู่ในตัวของมันเอง โดยหากเราทราบและจำรากศัพท์ดังกล่าวได้เยอะๆ ก็จะดีที่จะช่วยเราในการเดาความหมายของคำศัพท์ได้ครับ
ทั้งนี้ Affix จะมีอยู่ 2 ชนิดด้วยกัน ประกอบด้วย Prefix และ Suffix โดย Prefix เป็นส่วนที่ใช้เติมไว้ด้านหน้าของ Root ส่วน Suffix เป็นส่วนที่ใช้เติมไว้ด้านหลังของ Root เมื่อเติม Affix เข้าไป ความหมายและหน้าที่ทางไวยากรณ์ของคำจะเปลี่ยนไปด้วยนั่นเอง
