เชื่อว่านักเรียนภาษาอังกฤษหลายคนบางครั้งยังต้องสับสนหรือมีปัญหาในการใช้งานกับคำทั้ง 3 คำนี้อย่าง Quit, Quite และ Quiet แน่ๆ
ไม่ต้องกังวลอีกต่อไป!! เพราะวันนี้เรามีคำอธิบายถึงความแตกต่างของคำศัพท์ทั้ง 3 คำนี้มาฝากกัน ไปดูกันเลย ^^’
#1 QUIT: คำกริยา (verb)
มีความหมายคือออกจากสถานที่หรือออกจากการทำงาน เช่น
– “Alex quit college during his second year.”
– “Jenny is going to quit teaching and become full-time writer.”
หยุดการกระทำบางสิ่งบางอย่าง เช่น
– “Quit complaining and get on with the job!”
– “Sam says he’s going to quit smoking.”
#2 QUITE: คำวิเศษณ์ (adverb)
มีความหมายคือ ‘ค่อนข้าง’, ‘ถึงระดับใดระดับหนึ่ง’ หรือ ‘ระดับเล็กน้อยหรือมากแต่ไม่สมบูรณ์’ ไม่ได้เน้นย้ำการกระทำว่ามาก ตัวอย่างเช่น
– “It’s quite warm outside today.”
– “The house we bought needs quite a bit of work.”
– “The candidate spoke English quite well.”
– “I quite like living in a small town.”
– “Julie made it quite clear that she was against the idea.”
– “After his illness Charlie was never quite the same.”
#3 QUIET: คำคุณศัพท์ (adjective)
Quiet เป็นคำคุณศัพท์ที่มีความหมายว่า ‘ไม่รบกวน’, ‘สงบ’, ‘เงียบ’ หรือ ‘สุขุมรอบคอบ’ ตัวอย่างดังนี้
– “I told the children to be quiet while I was on the phone.”
– “This is a quiet area. There is not much traffic.”
– “Business has been quiet since the beginning of the year.”
– “We preferred to have a quiet wedding with just our two families.
– “Early in the morning the streets are empty and quiet.”
– “The doctor said she’d have a quiet word with my mother.”
