Ancient Egyptian kings wore a range of crowns, the most famous being the white crown of Upper Egypt and the red crown of Lower Egypt (although the earliest example of the red crown is pot mark on a Naqada II black topped vessel, so it probably does not actually originate in the north). And of course the striped nemes headdress, the most famous example being the gold and lapis lazuli nemes on the gold mask of Tutankhamun. During the New Kingdom, there are fascinating developments in the crowns worn by queens. A crown with two tall feathers appears first in the Thirteenth Dynasty (an interesting period in Egyptian history!), and becomes a standard part of queenly regalia. The feathers are often supported by a modius, a short conical crown that can be decorated with uraei. Just as the vintage rhinestones in my tiara from @mrmortimerswife sparkle, so too did the uraei surrounding a queenly modius represent the light of the sun. An epithet of the sun god "plentiful of uraei" corresponds to another epithet "rich of colors;" the uraeus serpent representing a fiery solar power can also be a way of envisaging the aura of brilliant, and multicolored light, surrounding a deity or deified human. Queen Tiye can also wear a modius with cow horns, a sun disk, and ostrich feathers, the crown of the goddess Hathor.
